June Recap

June was a pretty great month overall, and I was surprised by that, considering we had pretty much nothing on the agenda. Sometimes, that's a good thing, but more often than not, it's a bad thing: Usually it means that we have to scramble to not be boring and sit around the house with the boys.

We started the month off finishing up our fun family vacation to Brainerd, and headed straight (literally...straight) to the doctor's office to find Cashel had a double ear infection, so between that and his bug bite, he had a nice round of antibiotic that would knock it all out. Thankfully, the rest of the month we just had to deal with two teething kiddos (Cashel with his molars, and Kendrick, who got 3 more teeth this month). My goodness are we ever done with teething, and we're just getting started with Kendrick! We were so thankful, though, that we finally figured out why Cashel had been so aggressive, biting, throwing tantrums like crazy, and just general acting miserable. The downside is that it breaks this Mama's heart to know that he was miserable, and that it took so long to figure it out :( Thankfully, by the end of the month he was back to his normal self again :)

BUT...we spent a good chunk of time outside this month, including hitting the Windom pool, where my Mom got us a season pass for Christmas (thanks, Mama!) We were a little concerned at first, as Kendrick wanted nothing to do with it, but as the water warmed up throughout the month, he grew to absolutely LOVE it! Cashel is already ready to jump into the deep end into Daddy's or Mommy's arms. Crazy!

We also enjoyed time with friends and family as well as getting a new roof (yay!), a fun night for the boys and I at Windom Riverfest, some scary big storms, strawberry picking as a family at Schumaker's, lots of time at the park, a crazy dinner with the Grabers at the new Mexican restaurant in town (Margarita's Ville), and a really fun trip to the Circus with Cashel, where he got to ride a camel and an elephant! We also celebrated Mark on Father's Day with a low-key day at home and took a lot of walks with the mild temperatures.

Dinner at the Dibbles (June 12)
We joined Mandy and Claire for dinner at their new home in Westbrook on the 12th. Mandy is one of my dearest friends, and we are so happy for them with their beautiful new home :) It was nice to catch up with her a bit and watch our kiddos play together :)

Riverfest (June 13)
I took the boys to the Riverfest kick off on Friday for supper and then a cute Bob and the Beachcombers concert at the High School.

Father's Day (June 15)
We certainly couldn't ask for a more perfect-for-us Daddy :) We may not have done much for Father's Day, but we certainly weren't low on hugs and kisses.

Schumaker's with the Family (June 21)
We went strawberry picking at Schumaker's in Heron Lake on Saturday morning. The boys had a wonderful time!

Looking Ahead...
July promises to be busy, but we don't really have a lot of plans. Mark and I are really hoping to find some time to take a few half days of work and have date afternoons on the lake enjoying the jet ski and tube. Amy has a work conference she will be attending for two days in Bloomington, and we hope to get our deck stained and weather-proofed and ready for a new grill!

We really hope to also make it to Wild Water West at some point with friends of ours, and to make more trips to the pool as well. I guess time will tell! We never quite know what's going to happen from one month to the next :)

A Day In Our Life: Summer with 2 Kids Edition

I last did one of these posts in January, and happened to recently read another one by a blogger I follow and thought it'd be fun to do another, as our schedule has changed a bit since I last did one, because HELLO: It's summer and we are no longer confined to the house that had begun to feel like a dungeon after that long winter!

So here is us as of lately, with Cashel being now 2 1/2 and Kendrick being just about 10 months.

5:30am
My alarm clock goes off, and if Kendrick happened to have slept through the night, I likely get up. If he was up to eat, though, I tend to linger a while until Mark's alarm goes off: A Mama needs her sleep, after all.

5:50am
Mark and I are up for sure by now, and sometimes Kendrick is too, depending on how he slept. We head upstairs (since we're all sleeping downstairs now), and Mark goes and immediately gets a bowl of cereal: He can't function in the morning without his immediate bowl of cereal.

If Kendrick is up, I'll get him ready first, but if he's still sleeping, I then I get myself ready. You'll find me in the guest room that we use as our closet these days (we never did move it all to our room downstairs).

After getting ready, I'll go make my coffee (unless Mark has done that already - sometimes he's sweet like that), then do my makeup and get the straightening iron ready.

Sometimes I end up doing all of the above with a monkey around my ankles :)

(I always shower the night before these days because I just don't have time in my mornings without waking up at 5am, and when I'm going to bed at 11 and usually waking at least once in the night, I need that extra 30 minutes when I can get it.)

6:30am
Cashel is usually still sleeping these days, so Mark has to run down and get him up and get him dressed as quickly as possible. Some days Kendrick is still sleeping too, so that's when I'll go down and get him ready too. They're easy: diaper changes, shirts, shorts for both, then socks, shoes and sippy cup of milk (for Cashel) and 4oz bottle for Kendrick to hold him off until breakfast.

Before we know it, though, it's time to grab our bags and head out the door.

6:45am
Out the door and off to daycare.

We drop the boys off at daycare, then head to work, about 3 miles away.

7:00am
Mark and I arrive at work together (for those who didn't know that - we both work at the same place) and go our separate ways - him to the Engineering office, and me to the IS office.

I start checking emails right away while sipping on my coffee on a good day. Sometimes I hit the ground running all over the shop floor troubleshooting).

Here's a little view of my office area :)

I'm wondering how many of you noticed my awesome monitor "risers", and how many more of you noticed that they're two different heights right now haha

Every day is different for Mark and I. There are some days that we are out on the shop floor all day troubleshooting or observing, and others where we sit at our desks most of the day. Mark and I seldom see each other during the day at work, even though our offices aren't too far apart. On a very few days of the year you might even find me up on the scissor lift running network or phone cables or fixing printers. But the vast majority of the day, you'll find me at my desk doing all sorts of things, from data access to writing code to database entry to checking and responding to emails.

Mark spends a fair chunk of the day on the assembly line - especially when he has projects starting up or pilot runs - but he also is always working on processes at his desk or on slower days, finding cost savings.

Sometimes Mark comes back for a snack, since I am the snack keeper, but otherwise, we just see each other in the morning, at lunch, and when it's time to head home.

You might notice as a big difference from my last "Day in the Life" post that I no longer took a pump break: As of late last week, I'm no longer pumping at work, so that has been a big, positive(!) change for me.

noon/lunch
We had been bringing our lunch to work and walking around the plant, but life got hectic, and it's hard to find the time in our crazy mornings to actually grab our lunches. Plus, we now can actually get outside and go for walks with the boys in the evenings now that we don't have a foot of snow outside. Most days, lunch is leftovers from the night before, but sometimes we swing through McDonald's or just go home and make some grilled cheese or something like that.
3:30ish
End of the day buzzer.

I'll admit: When I hear it, I'm ready to run out of here almost immediately. Most days we take of around 3:45 or 4pm, though, as we are just finishing things up. It's not that I dislike work, it's just that I cannot wait to see my little boys. It's hard being away from them all day, and I like to be able to spend a little time with them before rushing to get supper ready by 5:15.
4pm
Lately we've been trying to get to the pool from 4-5 before they close for adult swim from 5-6. The timing stinks, honestly. It'd be nice if we could stay a little longer. If not swimming, we head home and let the boys play while I start prepping supper. Tonight, however, we ventured out for a gorgeous walk down the road a bit into the country.
5:15-5:30ish
Supper time! We sit down to eat at the table every night. This has been SO much easier since I started meal planning. Some nights are more complex meals that require quite a bit of prep, but my favorite nights are the easy ones like tonight: 15 minutes skillet lasagna - yum!

6:30pm
Bath time for Kendrick, then Cashel - sometimes they take a bath at the same time, but it's usually easier if they don't.

6:45ish
Kendrick and I head down to bed. He has a 6oz bottle, and then we read a few books before we turn off the lights and snuggle. We pray together, then sometimes he goes down right away, but sometimes I put him in his crib and let him fuss a bit before he goes to sleep.

Cashel and Daddy spend some quality time together when I'm putting Kendrick down (or vice versa, if Mark is putting Kendrick to bed that night), and that time is highly unstructured. Sometimes they go outside, sometimes they watch some Netflix, sometimes they jump on the bed, and sometimes they read.

8pm-ish
Cashel is ready for bed, and we make sure to fill up his sippy cup, have his blankie and monkey and head downstairs to his room.

Most of the time, we both are able to snuggle in his bed with him and read books, sing songs and pray together. Cashel is pretty particular about who is allowed to read which book. For example, under no circumstances am I ever allowed to read Tea Party Rules: Only Daddy can do that. But I am the official "Llama Llama Red Pajama" reader, and Daddy dare not touch that book either. However, we aren't exactly allowed to even sing these days: As soon as we begin, Cashel cuts us off, saying "No, NO!" and then he wants to sing, usually "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".

Lately he has been fighting bedtime much moreso than usual, and we're lucky if he falls asleep by 9pm.
9pm
We hope that both boys are asleep by now, and then we have a little downtime. I'll blog or work on my digital scrapbooking and Mark usually is playing games on his phone and/or watching TV. We'll tag-team the dishes and laundry if need by after a bit of downtime, then shower up and head to bed.
10:30pm
I prep Kendrick's last 6oz bottle of the day, then head down to change him into his night time diaper and feed him, burp him, and set him back down in his crib. Mark goes in to change Cashel into his nighttime diaper as well, and then we head to bed. Goodnight, world!

And thankfully, this is now where our nights end most of the time. Kendrick and Cashel have finally both been sleeping through the night for the most part. They are no longer battling colds and are mostly finished with this round of teething from what we can tell. HALLEUJAH! Of course, since I wrote this out and posted it on the blog, it is inevitable that it will probably change drastically tonight.

Schumaker's with the Family (June 21)

Strawberry picking at Schumaker's has been an annual thing ever since I went for the first time in 2010 with Mark. Most years we've all gone together, although when I was pregnant with Cashel, I went by myself.

2010 (Our first trip) We picked 25lbs of berries!

I'm fairly certain we went in 2011, but I never blogged about it or took pictures, so maybe we didn't? I know it was a super busy year with two family weddings in town on top of me being pregnant with Cashel, so maybe it just didn't happen. Granted, I am fairly certain I remember going...and I think it was VERY hot, I was a hot mess and went by myself.

In 2012, the berries were SO tiny. I went by myself early in the morning and picked something like 7lbs, and it took me something like 2 hours. They were perfect for smoothies, but I hardly was able to eat any of them for fear I wouldn't have enough to last me the rest of the summer and winter for smoothies.

Last year, 2013 we took Cashel, and it went about as expected with a mobile 17 month old. We went a little late in the season (although it was a late season), so we ended up with more smallish berries, but still got about 14lbs in the hour we were there.

This year, we took the boys with us on Saturday morning, and to be honest, I was a little bit nervous. Last year with Cashel was challenging, to say the least, but we just brought along the double stroller this year, and it really went great!

It was SO FUN to watch Kendrick nom down on those berries - he would get really really fussy when he ran out of berries, but would get this huge smile on his face the second you handed him another, and then proceed to annihilate the thing haha :) Cashel took berry picking very seriously this year, and helped pick probably about a pound of berries, even if probably a quarter of them were tiny and white, and another quarter of them were rotten.

We ended up with 12lbs overall this year in about 45 minutes. The berries were nice and big and super juicy. We had such a great time!

I'm very much looking forward to this being an annual thing for us. I have a feeling next year will be more fun, since Cashel will probably be more helpful and Kendrick will be able to do a little picking on his own too :) I just love this family tradition we started :)

Lately in Windom

I did a lot of garage sale-ing during the Windom city-wides with my friend Nancy. Hallelujah for sales where the wives left the hubbies in charge: Longaberger (or at least a knock off one) basket for $3? All clothing for 50 cents apiece? Yes, please!

{Day 1      ::      Day 2}

{Day3      ::      Longaberger basket}
New roof!

Peonies ready to burst!

I really swear that they were having a good time! Cashel had a blast playing with my bestie Mandy's daughter Claire.

Mandy and I had a nice time catching up too, and we LOVED seeing their new (stick build) home in Westbrook!

Caricature of the boys at Riverfest

They may have had a little TOO much fun at Bob the Beachcomber

Poor Cashel had a bit of a spill falling out of his bed trying to turn off the video monitor on his dresser :( He seemed unaffected, though.

Some big upgrades at work lately called for extra hours for Mama.

Kendrick is not a big fan of the water temp at the pool, so we've been spending a lot of time on the sidelines.

Cashel giving Daddy a little (okay, a LOT) of love :)

Family dance party break with Mama and Kendrick.

A few things have been giving me goosebumps lately:
  • Hearing that my nephew was alright just mere minutes after finding out that he had a seizure as a result of a fever spike
  • Hearing that Pastor Saeed was actually able to hug his parents after two years of being imprisoned and only communicating behind glass in prison (May he be released soon!!)
  • Some of the wreckage footage from Wessington Springs, SD and Pilgner, NE. WOW.

A short walk from our home on a beautiful evening.

Mildly creepy clouds shortly before a super crazy thunderstorm on June 16th.
