August Recap

Whoa doggies has it been a warm month! And we've certainly been busy around here, but not nearly as tediously busy as we were last month (you know, with the deck project and all), which was nice. Sadly, the heat (and humidity) really picked up this month, which was great for the crops, but rough on us trying to get outside and do much. We did manage to get out for a few walks and made it to the park a few times, but overall, we spent more time inside than I would prefer. All in all, this month seemed really long.

We started the month celebrating Mark's actual birthday on the 1st and Kendrick's dedication service at church on the 3rd.

We also had fun at a couple different fairs (both in Worthington and Windom) as well as to Lake Okoboji for a free Kip Moore concert as well as a fun time catching up with friends and a really nice weekend together while the boys spent their first whole weekend at Grandma and Grandpa's in Worthington. Mark's church softball team in Worthington also won the championship this year (woo hoo!), and the boys and I were bummed we didn't make it to the games as it was too late :(

Of course, the end of the month brought tears while we prepared for Kendrick's 1st Birthday, which went over very well!

Other highlights of the month include making up 7 batches of Grandma Vi's freezer corn (a tad ambitious, I think), the 30 Day Abs Challenge and discovering the series Cedar Cove on Netflix.

August has been a pretty good month. We've had a roller coaster of emotions raising two busy little boys - some days we feel like we're parents of the year, and then we pick up the boys that day and find Cashel was being mean to the other kids and Kendrick was having icky teething diapers and bad eczema breakouts and suddenly we feel like we have no idea what we're doing and like we're raising rabble-rousers: I have a feeling we'll have these yo-yo times their entire lives. But I DO know that they know they're loved :)

Mark's 35th Birthday (August 1)
For Mark's 35th Birthday, we enjoyed a nice dinner at Bergen with Mark's brother and his family and his Mom. We then went back to the house and had some cake and ice cream and opened presents.

Kendrick's Church Dedication (August 3)
I did a recap on Kendrick's dedication service on Kendrick's Crib. We had a nice day and grilled at our house afterward with Mark's Dad, Pam and Jess.

Worthington Fair and Splashy Pool Fun (August 9)
We enjoyed a short but sweet trip to the Worthington (Nobles County) Fair the second Saturday of the month. The boys were enthralled with the animals! After the fair, we stopped by Walmart, where I picked up an inflatable pool for the kiddos on a whim, since it was on sale. After naps, we enjoyed an evening of watching the boys play together :)

Kendrick's Birthday and Party (August 30)
Somehow we flew through this year with Kendrick and he turned ONE! We had 17 of our friends and family there for the party, which ended up being on our back deck on a gorgeous afternoon.

Looking Ahead...
September doesn't seem to be slowing down one bit! We're starting the month with a fun trip to Mankato with the boys to check out Sibley Park again (because seriously - they are going to go nuts!!) tomorrow. On the 13th, we're excited for the Reinbows Fall Festival just down the road from us, and then the next day we're heading down to Humboldt for Kaleigh Mae's birthday party. Our church bonfire is on the 20th, and we'll be celebrating 8 years of marriage on the 23rd. We are also hoping to make it to Ocheda Orchard to pick up probably entirely way too many apples again this year too.

God bless! Thanks for reading :)

Kendrick's 1st Birthday Party (August 30)

Our baby boy turned ONE this past Saturday, so we threw him a fun owl-themed first birthday party at our home.

Party Guests
We had a nice sized group for the party (17), since it was a holiday weekend and it didn't work for some of our families to be there. We had a great time!

Decor
We went with an owl theme for Kendrick's party, and I had such a fun time designing the invites and banner (a first for me, ordered from VistaPrint). I decided to go with browns, greens and blues for the paper products and decorations too.

Food
We went simple with the actual party, which was from 2-4pm, and just did desserts and fruit. I made three different kinds of cupcakes: brownie, white and carrot cake. For Kendrick's smash cake, I did an owl, and it turned out SO CUTE! I got the silicone mold here and made and frosted it myself. I think it turned out pretty great!

Gifts
Kendrick really couldn't have cared less about the gifts, but big brother had a LOT of fun helping him out :) He got some cool toys and books from family and friends, and a matching chair like Cashel's and some books from Mommy and Daddy, and a fun personalized dino towel and stuffed owl from Cashel.

We really had a great time, although I don't think I've crashed that hard in a LONG time afterward. Even a full 8 hours of sleep didn't help me recover enough! But really, in all honesty...does anyone want a dozen cupcakes? Really. Seriously. Because there is no way we can eat them all! haha :)

Happy Happy Birthday, sweet Kendrick Willard! We are so blessed to call you ours :)

Happy Birthday, Sweet Kendrick :)

Sweet boy, you have no idea how much we love you. It blows my mind when I realize it has been an entire YEAR since you joined our family: An incredible year!

In the past year, you've gone from this...

...to this...

...to THIS!

And seriously, little man - it has gone SO FAST! I am looking forward to the year ahead and hoping we all make it out alive (haha!)

Happy 1st Birthday, Kendrick Willard! It has been a privilege to be your Mama :)

Weekend Without Kids (August 22-24)

Mark's Dad and Step-Mom graciously offered (okay, begged, really haha) to watch our boys for an entire weekend before her upcoming procedure that will leave her out of commission for a bit.

It has been 2 1/2 years since Mark and I have spent more than one night alone together, so a whole weekend seemed almost crazy. It's not that we don't normally get the chance to sleep uninterrupted (our kids are crazy awesome sleepers...once we get them to bed), but rather that we always have to be on a early bedtime schedule ourselves, since no matter the bedtime, our wake up time is 6am (6:30 if we're lucky) no matter the day of the week. We don't get to eat when we're hungry, but rather when they're hungry, and we're constantly on their schedule (naps, bedtime, eating, snacking, playing...you get the picture.)

So the fun part of this whole weekend away was to be completely void of a schedule. And boy did we ever enjoy that part!

We had been talking about and researching what we should do with our weekend without our kiddos for weeks, and here were the requirements we came up with:
  1. We didn't want to have any sort of schedule, really. Or task list.
  2. We didn't want to spend significant time traveling.
  3. We didn't want to have to pack a lot of junk.
  4. We wanted to r-e-l-a-x.
  5. We didn't want to just sit at home and be bums, since we'd just miss our kids.
  6. We wanted to stay busy so we didn't worry about our kids.
With all that in mind, some early ideas we threw out in our little brainstorming session were:
  • Hop a flight to Vegas.
  • Drive to Colorado...
  • ...Or Minneapolis...
  • ...Or Sioux Falls...
  • ...Or Dubuque.
  • Stay home and catch up on organizing and house work.
  • Have a big movie marathon and stay in our pjs the entire weekend.
Some of these ideas appealed to the traveler in me...you know...traveling without kids? Doesn't that sound FUN!??! But to be honest, in the end, I felt exhausted by the idea of having to book flights or find hotels or, really, to even just travel further than the 30 miles to take the kids to Grandma and Grandpa's house.

So we settled for a compromise: A little out-of-town mixed with some sleeping in (in our OWN beds), shopping, eating out, movies, organizing, catching up on a couple projects, and just generally resting. We initially wanted to go golfing too, but that didn't pan out, as it was just so hot and humid.

I actually had the whole day off on Friday, since we had Kendrick's 1 year pictures that morning. (As an aside, HOW is that even possible?) So after we finished those, Kendrick and I picked up Cashel. I enjoyed having some extra time with my little boys before being apart from them the whole weekend.

Mark and I got the boys' things packed for their weekend away and all loaded up while they napped, and when they woke up, we got our last big time snuggles in before we drove them down to Worthington and dropped them off at Grandpa and Grandma's house. And then?

We legitimately did whatever we wanted to do. I had been wanting to see "If I Stay" (which was SO GOOD!), so we had Pizza Ranch for supper and then went to a movie. And it's not that we don't get to do this regularly, because we can usually do dinner and a movie most weekends when we bring the boys down to Worthington, but we usually have to go to a matinee, and we're usually always thinking about the time. We didn't get home until about 10pm that night, and then...we stayed up. We hung out, talked, relaxed, watched a little Cedar Cove (a new series we've been getting into), and I gave myself a manicure...and pedicure. We stayed up until midnight, which is just unheard of if we want to stay sane regularly. It.was.awesome.

Saturday was incredible, you guys! Well, aside from the part where I randomly woke up at 3:30am and then was up for the day by 7am: What can I say? I'm used to being up early anymore, and it's hard to really sleep in.

But in the 2 hours that I was up before Mark, it was this little piece of heaven that I think was probably exactly what I loved best about life before kids: baking banana bread, listening to Christmas music on Pandora and sipping on my coffee. Of course, I also did a little cleaning and organizing while the bread was baking (i.e. cleaning my spice cabinet, making a list for Mankato later that afternoon, a couple loads of laundry, cleaning off kitchen cabinets and counters and doing some dishes, and cleaning the toy room, living room and spare bedroom...getting together a few returns...) I felt so productive and just really blissful :) When the bread was out of the oven and cooled a bit, I took some down to Mark and we enjoyed breakfast in bed and just visiting.

We initially had talked about getting a tee time and going golfing, but to be honest, we felt pretty lazy and like staying in our pajamas, so we just bummed around, watched a couple episodes of Cedar Cove, and then got ready to go to Mankato.

We made a beeline to Buffalo Wild Wings when we got to Mankato around 1pm and enjoyed a leisurely lunch there, watching the Twins game and just talking like normal adults do (instead of chasing around impatient toddlers haha)

After lunch, we shopped the afternoon away (although we didn't buy much). We started with the home improvement stores, picking up some spindles for our upper deck, as a couple had broken, and a few odds and ends for projects that we always forget to finish. And I was just feeling blissful with newly-painted nails, flip flops, a cute summer dress and being able to shop carefree for fun things like new soaps and candles at Bath and Body Works with a yummy Sparkling Green Tea Lemonade from Caribou. It just all felt so freeing and relaxing, and it was really great to just be able to relax with Mark.

After all our shopping, we decided to grab a pizza at Papa John's and find somewhere scenic to enjoy it together. And seriously, you guys, I'm actually a little disappointed in Mark, because he has been holding out on me all this time! He took me to Sibley Park, and it is SO INCREDIBLE! And he has known about it for all these years and never once took me! It was GORGEOUS, and we're already talking about taking the boys and going back this next weekend.

We sat and enjoyed our pizza together while just taking in the incredible view, then walked around and even went to see the animals. This place is seriously magical - I envision us going back here a lot, and I may very well even venture here with the boys by myself in the fall when Mark is in the field, because, you know, I'm just that breed of crazy :)

We drove home into the sunset on the way home, then enjoyed a relaxing evening together. Mark enjoyed watching the end of the race, and I enjoyed a nice bubble bath while smelling my incredible new Bergamot Woods candle from B&BW.

Sunday was a pretty lazy day for us. We very very seldom miss church, but we were anxious to get to Worthington to pick up our kiddos, and we had a lot we wanted to get done at home before they got there...like finishing staining our deck, staining and replacing those new spindles, tackling a MUCH-delayed painting project in the downstairs bathroom (5 years in the making), emptying the kiddie pool so we could clean it and get it ready for Kendrick's party this coming Saturday, and a small organization project in the garage. The time really crept up on us, and before we knew it, it was 2pm and we were ready to go pick up the boys. It felt SO GREAT to finally get some of those projects finished, and it was also SO GREAT to get some sweet snuggles with out little guys :) We had missed them immensely! We were a little bummed that a cranky Cashel fell asleep on the way home, as we would have liked to snuggle him when we got home, but it was probably for the best: He slept TWELVE straight hours last night haha :) Kendrick was a little more snuggly and playful, and we enjoyed a few hours with him before he went down to bed.

We really had a great weekend together, and I'm glad we were able to have some time to be a little spontaneous...and lazy...and productive...and just relaxed. That being said, I'm also incredibly glad the boys are home again, because while it might be nice to have a clean, organized house for a couple days, I'd much rather have it filled with these crazy little boys and messy :)

Lake and Pizza with Friends (August 17)

Our friends the Larsens invited us out to his parents' home on Lake Okabena for a fun afternoon with some of our friends. We decided to go down there earlier and join Mark's Dad, Pam and Jess for church and lunch out before heading to their home for a while, hopeful to get the boys down for naps, which never happened.

We didn't end up making it out there nearly as early as we intended, and we ended up leaving the boys with Mark's Dad and Pam so we could enjoy ourselves instead of disciplining cranky kids all evening. It was probably a good call, but we wished they had been there all the same. It WAS really nice to just be able to enjoy the lake and whiz around on the jet ski a bit as well as catching up with friends too :) It was the first time Mark and I had been out together on the jet ski all summer.

It was really fun to see everyone elses' kids, even if we missed our own. I can't believe how big some of these babies are getting! But it was also crazy to see just how small they were compared to our chunky little Kendrick haha :)

It was truly just a perfect evening with a light breeze, but still nice and toasty and the sun on the opposite side of the house providing reprieve from the harsh sun.

We decided afterward to get together for supper at Pizza Ranch to catch up a bit more, which was nice also. It ended up being a later evening for us getting home, but we were glad to have a few hours away.

Lately in Windom

We've been to two different fairs in the past couple weeks. My favorite animal has been the turkeys, and Cashel's has been the chickens. Granted, we all thought this little calf was just the most adorable!

Mark's favorite part of the Nobles County Fair was showing the boys all the machinery. Cashel insisted on wearing his rainboots this day, and it was super humid and hot.

These two are so much fun right now, but we are struggling to get Cashel not to splash Kendrick.

Hammock time with Daddy

This little guy is CRAZY these days. And he desperately needs a haircut, but I'm just not sure I'm emotionally ready for that yet.

"I'm King of the World!"

He LOVES to swing!

We got to check out these guys' new home in Worthington and enjoyed supper with them!

So.Many.Situps these days. Mark has joined the challenge with me and is about 10 days behind me.

I just LOVE to see this on our deck when the boys are playing in the pool (or it rains)

We just love living this close to the country. The boys were waiting for the train to come.

First cotton candy...he wasn't that impressed. Also, absolutely on the shirt, buddy.

Nutty bars aren't nearly as delicious as I remember them being. Cashel wasn't that impressed either - this was about the only bite he took.

Sunset on Lake Okoboji

I love this picture because Cashel is finally not making his silly "cheese" smile. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE that smile, but it's really hard to capture his natural smile these days, and I love that one too :)

These boys just absolutely adore their Uncle Tyler!

FUN afternoon on Lake Okabena in Worthington - finally took out the jet ski!

Also fun catching up with them over supper at Pizza Ranch after the lake.

If the door to the bathroom is open, this kid is guaranteed to be there. He is fascinated by everything in here, from the garbage can to the toilet to the towel rack to the toys to the tub to the scale...you name it!

We got a *tinge* over-zealous about freezer corn this year. This is about 2/3 of what we got this year: 7 "dozen" (i.e. 14 ears a "dozen") of Muller sweet corn. VERY full cobs this year, and oh MAN is it yummy!

Sadly, this is what happens to my kitchen when we focus solely on the corn and nothing else...

I finally got my rings re-sized and can wear them again! I've felt very naked without them!

Mark's softball team won the championship in Worthington on Tuesday night! Great season, guys!

LOVING these cherry tomatoes we picked up at the farmers' market on Tuesday. SO.GOOD.
